Golf Events in the UK

There’s something special about golf events in the UK. I don’t know if it’s because there’s so few over here compared with how many there seem to be around the world, or if it’s purely down to the quality of the events and the fields attending.

The pinnacle of these will always be The Open Championship. It’s the highlight of the summer golfing calendar for a lot of people. Amazingly, while the world (and golf) has evolved at a rapid rate of knots, The Open has remained one of the most traditional weeks of the year. Generally played on one of the many top links courses around Britain, it often provides touring pros with the toughest test of the year…and not just because they have to swap the usual sunshine for the wind and rain in Scotland! It is also guaranteed to draw all the top players in world, which in turn will bring the crowds; something crucial to the survival of many small businesses in and around the selected courses.

Next on the list has to be the annual event held at Wentworth. A course that may have changed a lot over recent years has also lead to a field that seems to grow and grow in quality each year. This year is no exception with the likes of McIlroy, Fleetwood and Casey all turning out, plus the showcase of the celebrity pro-am which gets almost as much attention thanks to social media. It also encourages interaction from a typically younger generation with an influx of reality stars getting involved in golf, which is never going to be a bad thing. Maybe seeing a couple of them wearing Bunker Mentality gear would help even further!

The British Masters has had a bit of a revival over the past couple of years, thanks to Sky Sports and their heavy investment in the tournament. Having a different host each year, and taking the event to courses that wouldn’t normally host a European Tour event has given some life back to a tournament that slipped off the tour schedule. No doubt the success that this has brought will result in further expansion over the coming years, and I’m sure that guys will be queueing up to host at their chosen courses.
